Why Do I Get Acne?

Pimples begin as blockages to sebaceous (oil) gland ducts and usually happens during puberty.  When certain hormones are released those hormones cause the sebaceous glands to overproduce sebum (oil). Dead skin cells and bacteria on the surface of the skin can combine with the sebum to form a plug in the hair follicles. These plugs are known as closed comedones (whiteheads) or open comedones (blackheads).

Oil continues to be produced and the blocked gland keeps getting bigger and bigger. Bacteria grow in the blocked gland and produce fatty acids. Eventually, it bursts and releases the irritating substances, causing intense inflammation. The inflammation manifests as pimples.

Types of Acne

A person who suffers from acne typically has a mixture of different types of spots, including:

  • blackheads,
  • whiteheads,
  • papules,
  • pustules,
  • nodules,
  • and cysts.

Acne usually occurs on the face, neck, chest, back and shoulders where there are large numbers of sebaceous glands.

How to Get Rid of Acne

Over-the-counter acne treatment can only go so far to help adolescent acne and does not help with the pigmentation that results from picking at or popping pimples. However, it can be professionally treated with the right products (including medical grade facial peels) and prescription creams, laser, light and heat therapy, and even acne scar treatment. Unlike OTC drugs, these treatments are non-invasive and will not mess with your hormones.

Here at Bradford Skin Clinic, we have all the tools, products and experience to help you get rid of teenage acne. We will assess your skin and come up with the perfect treatment plan, which may consists of a combination of some or all of the following:

  • Dead Sea minerals
  • Clay peels
  • Laser acne treatment
  • Zyderma
  • iS Clinical Active Serum

Try some of medical grade facial peels!
